Abington ONCE AGAIN Named To Money Magazine's Best Places To Live In 2020
Abington has achieved national recognition on the list, which cites "great jobs, safe streets, and affordable homes."
ABINGTON, PA — Great news for Abington area residents: the township has achieved national recognition as one of the best places to live in the country.
That's according to Money Magazine, which cites "great jobs, safe streets, and affordable homes" in its new ranking issued for 2020 this week.
Out of communities on this year's list, Abington placed 19th overall.
To determine this year's Best Places To Live, Money analyzed a list of 1,890 communities with a population of at least 25,000. The publication then analyzed 115 separate data points on each community's economy, housing market, education system, employment, weather and more.
Reporters then researched each location to ensure the statistics were an accurate representation of each community.
Money pointed to Abington School District schools winning the Blue Ribbon award, as well as the proximity of major employers nearby.
"For those looking for cultural experiences, the city's sculpture garden at Abington Art Center is a must-see, and you can visit the Briar Bush Nature Center's museum and bird observatory for just $3," the publication notes. "Kids in the area love Alverthorpe Park — which features a wading pool, a playground and more."
Money added several additional factors this year to account for the coronavirus pandemic and recent unrest stemming from racial inequality. The publication incorporated new filters in two key areas: countywide unemployment and housing distress as a result of COVID-19 economic disruptions; and demographics, to ensure locations selected for this year's list were racially diverse and well-integrated.
To ensure geographic diversity, the publication limited the number of communities each county and state could have on this year's list — one community per county, and two per state.
Abington Among Money's 2019 'Best Places To Live In America'
Abington was among just two towns in all of Pennsylvania to make the magazine's coveted list of "Best Places To Live In America" for 2019.
ABINGTON, PA — Abington Township is getting some well-deserved love from national media.
Abington was among just two towns in all of Pennsylvania to make the Money magazine's coveted list of "Best Places To Live In America" for 2019.
Abington was 74th on the list. The other Pennsylvania town, Shadyside, in the Pittsburgh area, came in 94th.
Abington was 74th on the list. The other Pennsylvania town, Shadyside, in the Pittsburgh area, came in 94th.
"74 is good, but clearly there is room for some improvement," Abington Commissioner Mike Thompson shared via social media Tuesday. "Coming in October and November- community meetings to help us understand where you want Abington to be by 2035."
What made Abington stick out from its competitors? The new rankings, released Monday in partnership with Realtor.com, were compiled by looking at more than 160,000 data points, including economic health, cost of living, diversity, public education, crime, and income.
Abington was ranked the 49th best school district in Pennsylvania in a recent ranking by data compiler Niche. That's 11th in Montgomery County, but it was close behind many of its nearby competitors. A US News report places Abington as the 47th best in PA, and among the upper echelon of schools nationwide, with a 1,316th overall ranking (out of some 17,000 in the study).
Abington is also the only school district in Montgomery County to not raise its taxes for the 2019-20 school year, something that's hardly easy to overlook for the cost of living category.
The township's economic health is boosted by a diverse spread of shopping districts, ranging from the Willow Grove Mall to smaller neighborhood economic centers. Philadelphia is immediately next door, and residents are linked to the region via SEPTA bus and rail lines. This has spurred development, but homes remain generally affordable, especially when compared to nearby suburbs.
